Rust is topping charts again in 2021, and here’s why.
The past week has seen a huge surge in popularity for Facepunch Studios’ Rust.
This recent surge seems to be due, in no small part, to a number of popular Twitch Streamers.
What is Rust?
Rust is a multiplayer-only, survival-based video game released on the PC, with console releases set for later this year.
Moment-to-moment gameplay consists of gathering resources to craft weapons, food, and items to help players survive in a hostile environment where players are free to attack one another as they see fit.
Early access began for Rust all the way back in December of 2013 on Steam.
Since that initial early access release, Rust has seen a plethora of support from its developers, Facepunch Studios, including a fully-featured 1.0 release back in February of 2018.
Rust continues to see regular support from its developers, all of which can be tracked here.
Why is there a surge in popularity?
Rust’s recent surge in popularity is due, in no small part, to the Twitch community, notable among them OfflineTV.
OfflineTV is an entertainment group of content creators based in LA.
Using some of the biggest names on Twitch, the group regularly brings in huge audiences for whatever they’re playing.
Recently, they announced that they would be creating a private Rust server for their content group and 50 other Twitch streamers.
This is where the surge for Rust began and is the most notable occurrence for the game’s recent rise.
That’s not to discredit the development team for Rust, which has regularly been updating the game and releasing content since its early access release.
This is another reason Rust’s player base has been steadily rising.
