Uses for the Shield

The primary use for a shield in Minecraft is to block & defend damage from incoming attacks from both mobs & players.

Using the shield will block all incoming damage in front of the player if held up for at least 5 game ticks (1/4 of a second).

If the incoming damage is 4 or higher the shield will lose durability equal to the strength of the attack rounded up.

Attacks that you can block with the shield include:

  • Damage from melee attacks except for mobs or sprinting players with an axe.
  • Damage from normal, tipped & spectral arrows.
  • Fireballs from Ghasts, Blazes & Fire Chargers
  • Eggs & Snowballs
  • Explosions from TNT not lit by the player
