You can install shaders for Minecraft 1.17 & higher by using the Iris Shaders software & installation package. Shaders do not currently work for players using OptiFine on Minecraft 1.17.
Can You Install Shaders on 1.17 With OptiFine?
No. Players who are using the OptiFine performance mod are not be able to install shaders on Minecraft 1.17 as of the date this guide was written.
We are currently waiting for OptiFine to receive updates that will allow players to continue using shaders with newer versions of Minecraft.
You can still install shaders such as BSL & SEUS without OptiFine. In this guide below we’ll show you exactly what to do to install shaders for Minecraft 1.17.
Installing Iris Shaders for Minecraft 1.17
If you would like to install & play Minecraft 1.17 with shader packs, you can do so using an open source package called Iris Shaders.
Since OptiFine does not currently support shaders for Minecraft 1.17 & above, this is another great method that works well.
Follow the steps below in order to install Iris Shaders for 1.17.
Step 1 – Download Shader Packs
You can use any supported shaders from your favorite shader websites with Iris Shaders. If you don’t have any shader packs, you can download the most popular ones here.
Step 2 – Download Iris Shaders
First, you need to download the Iris Shaders package & installer. You can download it directly from Iris Shaders or by clicking this link.
Next, right click the installation file & select “open with Java”. (If this doesn’t work, you need to make sure you have the latest version of Java installed).
In the Iris Shaders Installer, make sure the settings match this information:
- Select Edition – Iris Standalone
- Select Game Version – 1.17
- Select Install Directory – (leave this alone)
- Use Custom Loader – (leave this setting checked)
Once your settings match those above hit “install”.
Step 3 – Launch Minecraft
With Iris Shaders now installed you need to open the regular Minecraft launcher & wait for it to load.
When Minecraft loads select the Iris Standalone package from the options menu next to the Play button. Refer to the image below for help.
If you don’t see the Iris package available in the dropdown list, go to the installations tab & make sure the “modded” version box is checked.
After Iris Standalone is selected you can now hit the Play button & load up Minecraft.
Step 4 – Install & Enable Shader Packs
Now that Minecraft is loaded up its time to install & activate the shader packs you downloaded earlier.
On the Minecraft main menu click “options” then “video settings” & then “shader packs”.
This will open up a screen where you can now drag & drop or manually open your downloaded shader packs.
You can drag your shader .zip files into this space or hit “open shader pack folder” & move your .zip files into the folder that way.
If the packs do not show up, simply hit the “refresh shader packs” button.
Select the pack the you want to use hit the apply button.
Hit done until you return to the main menu & launch your Minecraft world or server.
You are now playing Minecraft 1.17 with your favorite supported shaders without using OptiFine!
That’s everything you need to know about installing shaders on Minecraft 1.17! OptiFine does not currently support 1.17 shaders but hopefully it will soon.
