Sony Interactive Entertainment and Arrowhead Game Studios have hit a new milestone with their third-person shooter, Helldivers 2, surpassing the all-time peak concurrent player count of Halo Infinite on Steam.

This achievement places Helldivers 2 ahead of the first-person shooter developed by Xbox Game Studios and 343 Industries, marking a significant success for Sony on the platform.

According to data from SteamDB, Helldivers 2’s peak player count has exceeded that of Halo Infinite, previously considered Xbox Game Studios’ most successful live service game on Steam.

The game’s success is partly due to its simultaneous release on consoles and PC, a first for a Sony Interactive Entertainment title. Additionally, the inclusion of cross-play with the PS5 version has contributed to its growing popularity.

In contrast, Halo Infinite struggled to maintain traction on Steam, despite being available on both PC and Xbox consoles. Reports have indicated that older Call of Duty titles have attracted more players on Xbox than Halo Infinite and Battlefield 2042 combined, highlighting the challenges faced by these newer releases.

Helldivers 2, a sequel to the 2015 game Helldivers, launched on February 8, 2024, for PlayStation 5 and Windows. The game quickly garnered positive reviews and sold approximately 1 million units within just three days.

Moving from an isometric to a third-person perspective, Helldivers 2 retains the strategic depth of its predecessor, including the use of Strategems and a focus on friendly fire. The game supports multiplayer for up to four players and offers cross-play between PlayStation 5 and Windows platforms.

This achievement by Helldivers 2 not only demonstrates the game’s appeal but also underscores the competitive nature of the gaming industry, where new titles can quickly rise to prominence.
