What is Rust?
Rust is a multiplayer online survival game developed by Facepunch Studios. The game was first available in December of 2013 in early access.
Currently Rust is only available for Windows & Mac. The game was finally released in full in February of 2018.
Rust Delayed On Xbox & Playstation
On December 7th, 2020 Rust developers Double11 posted a community announcement to their blog.
They apologized for not being able to bring Rust to consoles in 2020 and plan to bring the game for the community in 2021.
Read the developers full message below.
Why have we been so quiet for so long? The world of games dev is a fickle beast; you never have the full picture up front and the development process often becomes more of a journey of discovery when bringing a PC title to console. As much as engaging with players is extremely important, we believe it also has to be meaningful and as we’ve been working away behind the scenes, we haven’t felt ready to share anything with you yet.
As a company in 2020, a year that has brought very challenging times for many, we’ve felt very fortunate to be able to keep doing what we love. We’ve always had some remote workers but moving the entire company home to keep everyone safe has presented challenges as we’ve found new ways to work with each other in the new normal that this year had in store for us.
We’re sorry that we haven’t been able to bring you Rust on console in 2020 as planned. We know from all of the messages that you’re excited to play it and we hope that with the dawn of 2021 we can restore your trust as we edge closer to being able to share something with you.
So When Is Rust Coming To Consoles?
Since its full release on desktops, Rust has been growing in popularity with many gamers hoping for a console release.
Xbox answered when they dropped a teaser for a Rust console release back in January of 2020.
Xbox slated the console release for this year. They stated at the end of the trailer that it would be “coming to Xbox in 2020“.
However, the world was not in the midst of a full-blown pandemic when they released the news back in January.
This is the right move by the developers and it allows them way more time to create a polished finished project on consoles.
Hopefully they will announce more information about the gaming in the coming new year.
When Can We Expect A Release Date?
No one can know for certain what Xbox or the developers at Facepunch have in the pipeline for a Rust console release.
The game is pretty popular and has over 500k+ reviews on Steam. Most of them which are overwhelmingly positive.
Rust also averages around 50,000 concurrent players at any given time. The game is still super active and the player base has only grown since its release.
We have hope that there will be a release date for Rust on console in 2021. We don’t see any reason why it would fail to make it to console, especially after a trailer was dropped.
An exact date would be a complete guess at this point. The best we can do is hang tight and get through this year while we wait for more information.
In the mean time, you can still hope into Rust on your Mac or PC. It may benefit you to get familiar with the game before an influx of new console players!
